블루메미술관의 자연을 향한 철학은 오래된 나무 한그루와 도시를 대표하는 회색의 콘크리트 덩어리가 만나는 건축적 풍경에서 출발하였습니다. 산자락에 군락으로 자라고 있던 160여년 된 굴참나무를 품에 안듯 지어져 도심안의 삶과 자연의 조화를 건축적 언어로 드러내며 블루메미술관은 자연과 예술을 연계하는 매개공간으로서의 역할을 상징화하고자 합니다. 한자로 '참진 眞', 라틴어로도 쿠에르쿠스가 진짜, 참이라는 뜻의 참나무속 나무는 짧은 시간 큰 숲을 이룰 만큼 자연 발아율이 높아 우리나라 전체 산림의 25퍼센트를 차지하는 대표 수종 중 하나입니다. 참나무 중에서 수명이 가장 긴 굴참나무는 자생종으로 우리나라 천연기념물로도 지정되어 있으며 낙엽지는 큰키나무로 높이 25미터정도까지 자랍니다. 상수리나무와 비슷한 길쭉한 잎을 가졌으나 잎의 뒷면에 별모양의 흰털이 밀생하여 은빛을 띱니다. 다양하다는 뜻의 베리아빌리스 속명은 잎의 모양 변이가 심한데서 유래한 이름입니다. 무려 369종이나 많은 곤충들의 서식지가 되는 나무이며 사람에게 이로운 식용가능한 버섯들이 자라는 나무입니다. 수피에 깊고 두꺼운 코르크가 발달하는데 이와 관련하여 우리나라 굴참나무의 어원은 세로로 불규칙하게 깊은 골이 패는 줄기 때문에 '골이지는 참나무'에서 유래했다고 합니다. 개화기는 5월이고 10월에는 도토리 열매가 떨어집니다.

Built as if to embrace a 160-year-old Chinese cork oak, the museum building is designed to represent harmony between life and nature in architectural glossaries and stands for its role as an intermediate space between nature and art.
The Chinese cork oak, whose binominal name is Quercus variabilis Blume of which Quercus in Latin means ‘real’ or ‘genuine,’ is a species of tree that takes up 25% of the forested areas in Korea as its germination rate is quite high and forms a large forest in a short period of time. Quercus variabilis, which has the longest life among the Quercus is a tall tree growing to approximately 25 meters. This tree has longish leaves similar to those of Quercus acutissima with silvery white hair on their under sides. Its generic term variabilis originates from its leaves’ serious variation in form. This tree is the habitat of as many as 369 species of insects, and edible mushrooms beneficial to people grow on it. Deep, thick cork develops from its bark, so its Korean name gulcham namu (굴참나무) is said to have derived from ‘deeply corrugated cork oak’ (골이 지는 참나무). Its blossoming season is May, and its acorns fall in October.
