식량생산자로만 단순화될 수 없는 가치생산자로서 농부의 일과 생각에 담긴 무형의 가치를 조명하는 전시
작은 농부와 현대미술작가가 협력하여 미술관에서 만들어가는 ‘경험의 사전’

블루메미술관은 경기도 파주시 후원으로 5월 18일부터 11월 17일까지 <같이 쓰는 농부사전> 전시를 개최한다. 식량생산자이자 가치생산자로서 농부의 일과 생각에 응축되어 있는 무형의 가치들을 조명하며 이 전시는 농부와 현대미술작가 네 팀의 드로잉, 영상, 설치 11점을 선보인다. 여기서 농부는 농업의 산업화를 위해 대량생산에 몰두하는 대농, 관행농과 구분되는 작은 농업을 지향하는 작은 농부들이다. 농작물 생산자로만 단순화될 수 없는 농부의 일과 생각의 확장성을 고민하는 다양한 작은 농부들의 이야기에서 이 전시는 네 개의 가치를 찾았다. 연구자의 자세로 자연을 탐구하는 삶을 살아간다는 것, 직업으로서의 농부가 아닌 자연의 흐름에 따르는 삶의 방법으로 농사를 택하거나, 함께 살아가는 공동체적 가치에 주목하는 삶, 기후위기의 문제해결에 동참하는 삶 등 작은 농부들이 만들어가고 있는 이러한 가치들의 동시대적 의미를 현대미술작가들과 해석한다. 농사를 짓지 않는 95%의 인간이 농사를 짓는 5%의 인간에게 의존하고 있는 것은 먹고 사는 행위 이상의 생명을 지탱하는 태도와 관점의 영역을 포괄한다. 경기 고양의 찬우물농장, 양평의 종합재미농장, 충북 괴산의 뭐하농, 강원 영월의 그래도팜의 농부들과 네 명의 현대미술작가들의 협업으로 만들어진 이 전시는 농사를 짓지 않아도 누구나 ‘농부적 삶’이 가능하다 말한다. 현재의 삶의 방식을 벗어나 새로운 라이프스타일을 찾는 이들에게 농부는 대안적인 가치를 보여주고 행위를 이끄는 사람들이기 때문이다. 블루메미술관은 <같이 쓰는 농부사전> 전시를 통해서 자연의 거대한 순환의 고리 안에서 서있는 농부의 삶과 나의 삶이 연결되어 있음을 이해하고 공감하는 것의 문화적 가치를 찾고자 한다. 나아가 이를 통해 기후위기시대 사고의 전환과 또다른 삶의 방식을 찾는 이들의 느슨한 연대를 만들어갈 수 있다 말한다.

I. 연구자로서의 농부 - 자연을 탐구하는 삶
첫번째, 유독 연구자의 자세를 지닌 농부들이 있다. 농약과 제초제 등으로 많은 변수를 균일하게 통제하기보다 더 큰 생태계의 질서를 읽어내어 이를 적용하려는 유기농, 노지 농부들에게 자연은 늘 탐구의 대상이다. 가장 큰 농사도구인 흙을 연구하며 50년 농사일을 했다면 50번의 실험밖에 하지 못한 것이라 말하는 농부의 삶에서 평생 연구자의 태도로 살아간다는 것, 크고 작은 자연을 매일의 대상으로 두고 탐구하며 사는 삶의 동시대적 가치를 읽는다. 흙 한줌 안 수억의 생명에 대해 우주보다 밝혀진 것이 없다 말하는 그래도팜 원승현 농부가 일군 유기농 퇴비가 전시장 안에 쌓여있다. ‘살아있는’ 흙에서만 작물이 고유의 향을 만든다는 농부와의 대화에서 백정기 작가는 향에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 땅과 책을 은유적으로 연결한 기계 장치를 만들었다.

II. 가치 생산자로서의 농부 - 자연의 흐름에 따르는 삶
두번째, 자연과 함께 살아가는 방법 중 하나로 농사를 선택한 농부들과 우리는 ‘무슨 직업을 가질 것인가’ 보다 ‘어떤 삶을 살아갈 것인가’라는 질문을 나눌 수 있다. 자연의 흐름에 따라 일과 쉼의 행위가 조절되는 삶, 내가 몸을 움직여 일하면 자라고 거둘 것이 있는 자급자족하는 삶, 자연과 만나며 영감을 얻는 삶을 살고자 농부가 된 이들은 작물생산자라기보다 가치 생산자이다. 농한기가 있는 삶을 택한 종합재미농장 김신범, 안정화 농부는 대를 이어가는 토종,재래종 씨앗으로 농사를 짓는다. 이들은 전시안에서 씨앗 아카이브, 밭지도를 통해 입체적이며 순환하는 농부의 시간을 말한다. 4개월간 이들의 농장에 자주 머문 김준서 작가는 그곳에서 경계가 모호하고 때로 몽환적으로 감각되었던 시간성을 영상과 설치 작품으로 풀어낸다.

III. 매개자로서의 농부 - 상생하는 삶
세번째, 농사짓는 과정 자체에서 오는 즐거움 중 함께하는 삶의 가치를 말하는 농부들이 있다. 농사는 자연과 자연, 자연과 사람, 사람과 사람사이의 관계를 돌보는 일이기에 농부의 영역은 좋은 농산물을 생산하는 것에서 같이 일하고 살아가는 공동체에 대한 관심, 나아가 내가 선택한 지역의 지속가능성을 위한 활동으로 자연스럽게 확장되어 간다는 것이다.  그렇기에 누구나 ‘농부적 삶’이 가능하다 말하는 뭐하농 이지현 농부의 농사일에는 다양한 관계를 돌보는 일도 중요하게 자리한다. 제초제 없이 식물들이 서로 영향을 주고받으며 함께 생장해가는 ‘동반식물’ 농법을 바탕으로 경관적으로도 아름답고 다양한 사람과 자연이 어울리는 공원과 같은 밭을 만드는 농부의 이야기가 전시장에 텍스트로 펼쳐진다. ‘동반식물’의 흥미로운 상호관계를 인간이 만든 사물로 해석하며 조호영 작가는 일상사물들을 가드닝하듯 기능과 에너지의 관계망안으로 들여와 관객들이 작은 생태계를 경험해 보게 한다. 

IV. 생태관리자로서의 농부 - 지속가능한 삶
네번째, 기후위기 시대 먹을거리, 토양, 지구로 확장되는 공공의 영역을 생각하며 농사짓는 농부들이 늘어나고 있다. ‘생태관리자’라는 역할을 감당하고자 하는 농부들은 마트에서 사계절 획일적인 농산물을 늘 사먹을 수 있는 것이 당연하다 생각해온 이들에게 당연함 뒤 이면의 문제를 인식하는 관점의 전환이 필요하다 말한다. 작은 농부들이 땅의 원리에 따른 다양한 먹을거리를 이어가고 이 행위의 가치를 지지하는 소비문화가 두터워질 때 자연은 다시 순환한다는 것이다.  신도시 인근에서 가장 에너지를 덜 쓸 수 있는 노지농사를 지어온 고양찬우물농장 이상린 농부가 계절의 기록처럼 생산해온 작물들을 식경험 디자이너인 스몰 바치 스튜디오 강은경 작가가 전시장안에 갈무리한다. 입하에서 입동에 이르는 전시기간동안 절기별 농부의 작물을 일시적 주방이 된 미술관에서 관객들이 함께 갈무리하며 산업화된 소비의 경험에서 누락되어 온 밭에서의 상황과 이야기를 아카이빙한다.

Farmers as value producers, not just food producers

We are shifting our direction and exploring new criteria in an era where grave natural problems overlap with individual lives. When we must address fundamental questions beyond immediate issues, farmers serve as a reference point for finding philosophical answers. The reliance of the 95% who do not farm on the 5% who do farm encompasses attitudes and perspectives that sustain life beyond mere sustenance. This
exhibition suggests that we can discover a new perspective on the world and life from the intangible values found in the works and thoughts of farmers. The farmers featured here are small-scale farmers, distinct from large-scale or conventional farmers focused on industrialized agriculture. This exhibition seeks to explore four key values in the stories of these small farmers, who have thoughtfully considered the broader implications of their work and mindset beyond just crop production. It aims to connect the innovative thinking and alternative lifestyles of these farmers with people living today, sharing the invisible values found in farming with the contemporary art world.

Farmer as a researcher – A life of exploring nature
First, some farmers adopt the attitude of researchers. For organic and outdoor farmers, nature is always an object of study. Rather than uniformly controlling many variables with pesticides and herbicides, they try to understand the order of the enormous ecosystem. A farmer might state that farming for fifty years is equivalent to conducting fifty experiments, continually researching soil, their most important tool. This lifelong commitment to studying nature reflects contemporary values of living with a researcher’s mindset, exploring nature daily. One example is Seunghyun Won from Farm Nevertheless, who claims that we know as little about the billions of lives in a handful of soil as we do about the universe. His organic compost is displayed in the exhibition. Artist Jungki Baek, inspired by a farmer's observation that crops emit their unique scents only in 'living' soil, created a mechanical device that metaphorically connects the land and books, based on his research on scent.

Farmer as a value producer – A life in the flow of nature
Second, we can share the question, “What kind of life will I lead?” rather than “What job will I have?” with farmers who have chosen farming as a way to live harmoniously with nature. These individuals have embraced farming to lead a life where work and rest are dictated by the natural rhythms, fostering self-sufficiency through growing and harvesting crops. This lifestyle, inspired by constant interaction with nature, positions them as value producers rather than mere crop producers. Farmers Sinbum Kim and Jeonghwa Ahn from Amuse by Farm exemplify this ethos. They chose to live a life of organic farmers who work with native seeds passed down through generations. They reflect a three-dimensional and cyclical perception of time through seed archives and field maps in the exhibition. Artists Junseo Kim and Minji Kang, who spent four months on their farm, interpret the subtle and sometimes hypnotic temporality of farming through flipbooks, videos, and installation works.

Farmer as a mediator – A life of mutual prosperity
Third, some farmers emphasize the value of living together and the joys that farming brings. Farming involves nurturing relationships between nature and nature, nature and humans, and people with each other. As a result, the role of farmers naturally extends from producing agricultural products to engaging with the community and ensuring the sustainability of their chosen area. Farmer Jihyeon Lee from Mohanong, who believes anyone can live a "farmer life," highlights the importance of caring for these various relationships. Lee's work is showcased through a text at the venue, illustrating the creation of a park-like field that is both scenically beautiful and a space where diverse people and nature coexist. This field is based on the "companion plant" farming method, where plants grow together and interact without the use of herbicides. Artist Hoyoung Cho interprets the fascinating interrelationships of companion plants through human-made objects, allowing viewers to enter a network of function and energy and experience a small ecosystem.

Farmer as an ecological steward – A sustainable way of life
Fourth, an increasing number of farmers are focusing on the public domain, addressing issues such as food, soil, and the earth in the era of climate crisis. These farmers see themselves as "ecological stewards," challenging the assumption that it is natural to buy and eat uniform agricultural products year-round from supermarkets. They argue that consumers need to change their perspectives to recognize the problems behind this perceived normality. When small-scale farmers continue to produce a variety of foods based on the principles of the land, and consumer culture supports this value, nature can regenerate and thrive. Sangrin Lee, a farmer from Goyang Coolwell Farm, practices open-field farming with minimal energy use in urban area. His seasonal crops are artistically treated and archived in the exhibition space by artist Eunkyung Kang from Small Batch Studio. During the exhibition period, spanning from the onset of summer to the onset of winter, the gallery transforms into a temporary kitchen where visitors can engage with the farmer's crops. This interactive experience allows the audience to archive and reflect on the situations and stories from the farmer’s fields, which are often absent in industrialized consumption.
